A few thoughts concerning my process if you're interested, or if you're inclined to try this particular art form yourself.

The materials

Nature provides everything, and everything has potential. Just venture out to the beach or the forest, keep your eyes on the ground and grab anything interesting. Make sure it's not decaying and don't forget to enjoy the scenery while you're out. Any plant or life form that has passed on from this life, and has left something behind, can be re-used, and re-born into art.  However, it's not that simple.  It takes help from family and friends to search and gather in the wild, as often as possible.  For some items, there's never enough. I could not be as prolific as I am without their help and support, and I'm not really that prolific.  It takes an abundance of materials so you have choices, to use the right piece for the right purpose.  If you don't have choices, the end result will be less than it should be.  This isn't just gluing sticks together like macaroni art, every piece of the puzzle has it's own unique story.

The method

It has to present itself in the wood...
Knowledge plus imagination equals creation.  40 plus years of studying the animal kingdom, mythology, fantasy, etc. has given me the ability to visualize life and movement in something like a piece of driftwood.  It can be difficult however, at times, when you know you have a beautiful piece of driftwood, that looks like...something...and it can take months, or even years to see what it is.  It has to present itself in the wood, it can't be forced to look like something it isn't. Too much compromise will affect the overall quality.  Carving is also avoided unless absolutely necessary  and only in small amounts.  The only synthetic materials used, aside from paint and glue, are glass which I have used only once for realistic owl eyes . Paint or stain is avoided but necessary at times for color matching when you have the piece you want to add, but the color is too different.  There is a delicate balance between too much or too little detail, this is carefully calculated for each piece.  I have my own set of rules, governed by what I would want to see if someone else was doing this, which as far as I have seen, there aren't many.
