The foundation for this piece began with the burl piece that is used for the head. Such a rare type of material demanded an equally impressive piece for the body, and that piece was eventually found in a very old patch of thick forest that lied within a flood plain in my hometown. This flood plain felled large trees which in turn created beautiful pieces of root driftwood and that is where I found the piece for the dragons body. I then assembled the legs using spruce cone cores, small pieces of driftwood, and pine cone scales. From this point it was a long and tedious process of adding all the scales, spikes, spines, and plates that dragons have. To achieve this I used milkweed and teasel on the neck, spruce cone scales for the underbelly plates and vertical back plates. Pine cone scales were used for the back spikes also. On the face is a bird vertebrae combined with and acorn for the muzzle. The teeth are made using bone shards, and the eyes are rare moonstones that are found in granite in my hometown. The horns are driftwood and the ears are maple samara seeds.
This was the most time consuming and complex piece I have made to date, with the owl and warthog being a close second, and that fact is reflected in the price.
