Driftwood Art - Galapagos Tortoise
A Galapagos tortoise made using driftwood as the primary material in combination with other materials found in nature.H 7"/L 11".
This sculpture began with a very interesting and unusual piece of Ontario floodplain driftwood that was also a burl. After many months of contemplation, I finally saw that it could be a tortoise shell and body. I then realized that simulating the scaly texture of the legs could be achieved fairly well with spruce cones, with the addition of pistachio shells for the claws. For the head, I found a piece of driftwood that looked like a tortoise head, but not quite the right proportions, so I decided to do some carving on it to make it more realistic. The eyes were then added and the stone I used for them is a variety of amphibole commonly referred to as hornblende.
Some staining is added for color matching. Prior to assembly, all parts go through a cleaning and heat treatment process. Upon completion, the sculpture is coated with a protective sealant and bonding agent. Mounted on a black wood base.
