Driftwood Art - The Wyvern Dragon
A sculpture of a dragon "The Wraith Wyvern" using driftwood as the primary material. Other materials used for this sculpture are bone shards, abalone shell shards, spruce cones and scales, pine cone scales, and white quartz.

The Wraith Wyvern began with an beautiful, detailed piece that spans the full length of the sculpture, from the tail to the head. I was fortunate to find wings that fit the piece to perfection, and once that was achieved, I could focus on details throughout the piece. I used abalone shards for the tail spikes and the horns on the head, and bone shards for the spiked plates on the back. The legs were made using small spruce cone cores, with benji tree root talons. The snout is made with an acorn, and the lower jaw and facial plates are pine cone scales. The eyes are bright white quartz stones. Some paint staining is applied to the wings and face for color matching. An interesting touch to this piece is the base that it's mounted on, which is an end cut off a log that was taken down by a beaver. As with all my sculptures, prior to assembly, each part goes through a cleaning and heat treatment process. The final product is lightly coated with a sealant.
The success and joy for me in this piece is the use of the natural beauty in the details of the driftwood, along with the proper choice for it's purpose, which is of utmost importance in my work. The purpose of my work is to accentuate what the driftwood already looks like, not to just use driftwood to make something that you feel like making. In that respect I think this sculpture is very successful.
